When it comes to above ground pools and pool parts, there are a lot of know-it-alls out there. While most of these people are well-meaning, all too many have been fed inaccurate information that they now treat as gospel. Even worse, their incorrect assumptions might lead them to pass bad advice on to you. Of coarse many of the common issue we see also apply to inground pools too. So, before you make a DIY mess out of your summer fun, let’s discuss some of the biggest myths about pool parts we encounter every day.

When you replace your motor, you can skip changing the shaft seal

Replacing a motor can get real expensive real fast. For that reason, pool owners will often look at the extra $20 – $30 required to replace the motor shaft seal and decide to skip the whole process. However, if you reuse your old seal, you’ll not only void the warranty of your brand new motor, but you run the risk the two parts won’t properly mate. It’s just a few more dollars. You’ll thank yourself in the end!

Horsepower doesn’t matter for replacement motors

This is a big one. Sure, it’s true that you can change your pump motor to either a higher or lower horsepower, but it’s not true that doing so won’t have consequences. You see, your diffuser and pump impeller are directly impacted by your motor’s horsepower. If you don’t ensure that all these components match up, you’ll be buying another new motor to replace the one you just accidentally burned out.

You can lube your O-rings with Vaseline

Vaseline seems to be every DIY pool repair man’s go-to when lubing up O-rings. However, “petroleum jelly,” as it’s more commonly known, actually breaks down rubber. Instead, you want to use lubricants that are water, silicone, or Teflon-based. They make lube specific for swimming pool seals and o-rings. It’s available at most any pool store and probably even Walmart.

You can trust your pressure gauge

We’ve had customers who have wasted entire days checking every piece of pool equipment to explain a high or low pressure reading. In most cases, they come to find out that it’s the gauge itself that is faulty. To avoid feeling this way, turn your pump off first and see if the needle returns to zero. If it doesn’t, that should be the first replacement part you buy. These things go bad all of the time and they are only about $10 at any pool store.

All O-rings are created equal

Even a tiny difference in thickness, shape, or diameter can ruin a seal and cause a piece of expensive pool equipment to fail. Don’t try to guess when it comes to O-rings. Make sure you’re getting the exact type and size specified by the company that created the part in question.

Palm Bay and Above Ground Pools

I wanted to write this blog post just to give Palm Bay home owners some guidance when it comes to selecting a new swimming pool. It’s early in the swim season but the weather is changing and we’re busy already. I actually went to measure several yards and advise on which pools would fit and work best for our customer’s needs.

Palm Bay is the largest city in Brevard County and with over 100,000 residents it’s easy to see why it makes up such a large percentage of the phone calls and emails we receive each summer. We get a lot of the same concerns from Palm Bay residents so I just wanted to touch on this subject.

There is not much above ground ground pool advice for Palm Bay residents that I wouldn’t give to someone in another coastal Florida city. Even though Palm Bay is located inland slightly from the ocean, the soil and air are still quite corrosive and you should get a pool designed for that environment.

Saltwater Pools or Chlorine

Over the years I have worked extensively in Brevard County and Palm Bay specifically. I can say there are a lot of areas where the ground is high and dry, and some areas that are very wet, especially in the rainy season. Because of so many different soils and being in close proximity to the salty ocean, there is really only a few pool models I recommend.

The toughest of the bunch will be the resin models as they resist rust. Resin pools have top ledges and frame rails made from polymers so they are protected from the wet salty earth and the sun rays. In a nutshell saltwater swimming pools are just better pools and you should consider one even if you don’t use a salt system. The materials used in their construction are upgraded so they cost a little more, but the pay off is a much longer pool life.

Best Above Ground Pools for Palm Bay

If you are looking for the best above ground pool for your money, go with the Caspian from Pools Above Ground. This is an all resin pool with the stainless steel wall panel for the skimmer area. This model will do the best in this climate, it looks great and will outlast all others. I say this model in particular because I know it works well and really lasts. It’s also warrantied for saltwater and freshwater.

If you are looking to save a little money and still want all the best features, go with their Mediterranean or Regency pool. The is a mostly resin model that still has the stainless steel wall panel and saltwater warranty. It’s not quite as beefy but darn close and a few hundred dollars cheaper.

Pool Filters For Above Ground Pools


Below we have the 3 basic types of filter system used on above ground pools. I have added some details about each design to illustrate the differences as well as pros and cons of each style. Hopefully this will make choosing the filter system for your above ground pool easier.


Sand Filters


A sand filter is large tank which is filled with sand. As the pool pump forces the water through tank it passes through the sand and particles like hair, bugs and other things are trapped in the sand and removed from the pool water. Periodically the sand needs to be rinsed out to be effective again, this process is called back-washing. Cleaning the sand in the tank in done by using a valve on top of the filter called a multi-port valve. By selecting different placements on the valve water is sent back through the sand the other direction stirring it up and removing the trapped debris. The dirty water and debris and sent out of the tank and into the yard. Once clean water runs from the tank the valve is moved back into position again and pool filtration resumes. The length to clean the filter is only a couple of minutes and the tank is typically clean weekly.

Advantages of sand filters are quick easy maintenance, no sand is lost and nothing is added. Disadvantage is the least effective at removing debris and the hardest to system used to turn a green pool clear again.


Cartridge Filters


The cartridge filter system is a large tank with a finely pleated cloth cartridge inside. The filter cartridge looks like a automotive air filter or a home air-conditioner filter. The dirty pool water enters the tank and is forced across the filter inside before leaving the tank and heading back into the pool. In much the same way a strainer works, the debris from the dirty water is trapped on the filter cartridge. Over time the filter gets clogged up so it’s simply removed from the tank, washed with pressured water from a garden hose and fitted back in the tank again. This type of filter has no moving parts, rarely breaks and is easy to inspect for any other maintenance needs.

Advantages of the cartridge filter are lack of moving pieces and very effective cleaning. Disadvantages are maintenance takes longer than a sand filter and it’s a little messier. Hands down my pick for best filter system by far.


DE Filters


De filter get their name from a component used in them called the Diatomaceous Earth. DE is a fine form of the hardened algae which proves to be a very appropriate filter as it stops even the smallest microscopic particles. DE filters are a combination of the design of Sand and Cartridge Filters. It is basically a container which has fingers with little holes like the ones in sand filters. Except those fingers are coated with a filtering material and which is eventually coated with the DE powder. Having to go through many filters, the cleansing process is more than guaranteed. It is the most efficient filter used for above the ground pools.

Advantages of DE are the best in filtering but only marginally better than a cartridge filter. Disadvantages are many expensive internal parts, messy and longer maintenance and toxic DE powder that must be added each time the filter is cleaned. Great filter but too much work and not much better than a quality cartridge system.

What Is Pool Cove?


Pool Cove is simply a berm or transition from the pool floor to the pool wall. This “cove” can be made of dirt, sand or pre-formed foam sections. The main purpose of the pool cove is to keep the pool liner from coming in contact with the pool frame and causing damage to the liner. Every above ground pool needs one, so you will either need to make your own cove or buy a pool cove kit.

Pre-formed pool cove kits are great for any above ground pool installation as the cove sections are uniform and give a professional appearance when installed. Installation is quick and easy as the cove sections come with adhesive backing which ensures they stay where they’re put. These pool cove kits are fairly inexpensive and do not deteriorate over time.

When installing your swimming pool on concrete or other hard surfaces, foam cove kits and pool floor pads are a must as rains and splashing will cause sand coves to wash out from under the pool. This washing away causes the frame to become exposed to the pool liner and risking puncture.

Sand or dirt is fine to use as cove in most other cases as long as it’s clean and free from debris. The downside of this type of cove is that it doesn’t always stay put. It can wash out over time and expose the framework to the liner. If the liner comes in contact with it punctures can occur. If you build a cove be sure to build it up the wall at least 4″ and out from the wall at least 4″.

Regardless of which way you go when selecting a pool cove for your new pool, a proper cove will protect your liner from damage and take stress of the liner’s seams. This alone will add years to the life of your pool liner.

Solar Pool Covers, What Are They?


Solar pool covers are an inexpensive way to extend your swimming season by keeping your pool water warmer longer. These pool covers are made from a lightweight plastic material that looks very similar to bubble wrap. It’s the thousands of small bubbles in the cover that keeps it floating on the pool water’s surface. Use one of these solar covers on your pool and you’ll likely be able to add a couple of months to your swim season every year.


Who Would Use One?


Solar pool covers sometimes called solar blankets, are used by anyone with an above ground pool or inground pool. It doesn’t matter the type of pool as it’s function is to keep pool water warm. If you can elevate the water temperature of your pool by 10-15°F then you’ll be able to swim longer into the fall and still be comfortable, even in Central Florida.

If you use the cover regularly you will begin to see the water temperature rise each day and allow use of your pool longer into the year.

For others the use of hooks around the pool makes solar cover access and storage a simple task.

For all the do it yourself pool liner installers out there this blog is a great read. I was inspired to write it by a pool liner replacement we recently did in Deltona where the home owners gave up on doing the liner change themselves. They built the pool originally and did a very nice job doing so, but a change in liner design derailed their valiant efforts. If a self installed pool liner change is in your future, reading this blog may prove to be quite valuable one day.


What Is Pool Liner Coping For Above Ground Pools?


Pool liner coping simply installs on top of the pool liner and holds it firmly onto the pool wall. Liner coping is needed to hold the liner in place while protecting it from being damaged by the metal stabilizer bars. The metal or sometimes resin stabilizer bars squeeze the coping ensuring a tight grip on the pool liner preventing it from slipping off the pool wall and down in the water. Coping is always made of plastic and comes in strips that vary between 2 and four feet in length. The shape of the coping can vary but it’s mostly flat or V-shaped like the image above.


Liner Coping And Different Style Liners


Today most all above ground pool kits come with either an overlap or unibead pool liner. The unibead liner is considered an upgrade because they are a fitted liner and designed for a specific pool wall height. When purchasing one you must know the height of the pool wall for proper fit. The reason for upgrading to the unibead or J-Hook pool liner is they are more decorative, easier to install and have the coping built into their design.

Because the upper lip of the the unibead/j-hook liner is so thick no additional coping is used. The extra cost of this type of liner is usually offset by the fact no coping needs to be purchased for it’s installation. This usually makes this type of liner the better way to go for most self installers.

Now back to our frustrated home owner I told you about in the beginning of this blog post. When these nice people first bought their pool it came with the unibead or j-hook pool liner to start with. After several years of use it was time for them to replace it, so they purchased a new overlap liner to save some money. Once the pool was disassembled and readied for the new liner the problems began as overlap liners require coping strips to keep the liner attached at the top of the pool wall and their pool had none to begin with. So after many days of trying to keep the liner on the wall, filling and emptying the pool several time, they finally gave up the fight. Luckily for them the liner wasn’t ruined in the process, but could have been if they went much further.

If they had only known that pool liner coping is required on all overlap liners they may had gotten through this project successfully. Just remember that all overlap pool liner need coping strips to secure it to the wall and they should be replaced when changing the pool liner every time. If you always buy a coping kit for your size pool you’ll never have an issue similar to this. Pool liner coping kits aren’t expensive and they’re great insurance that your liner installation will be a better one.

What Is Nutgrass?


Nutgrass, also known as nutsedge is a perennial grass-like weed that seeks out the moist poorly drained sections of your yard or garden and grows faster in hot weather than our lawns do. It’s leaves are grass-like and yellow-green, while the spiky head is purple or yellow. It’s a tough weed to control because it grows from tiny tubers or nutlets that form on roots that can grow 8-14 inches deep in the soil. Pull out the roots and some tubers will stay behind to grow again. Individual nutsedge plants may eventually form patches in your yard of 10 feet or more in diameter.

What makes this a big deal to above ground pool owners is that this weed will grow right up through your liner and cause leaks. Even worse is the fact it will grow through practically anything you lay on the ground to stop it, and I’m not exaggerating when I say this either. I’ve seen nutgrass grow through practically everything including weed barrier, plastic sheeting, Gorilla Pads, Styro-Foam, plywood ,vermiculite, roofing paper and more. This stuff will grow through asphalt so you know your pool liner is no match for it. If you live in Florida or the deep south, there is a really good chance nutgrass may be lurking in your backyard.


How Do I Stop Nutgrass From Growing Through My Pool Liner?


One of the most frequent questions people ask about installing their own pool is whether they must remove the grass on the ground first. The answer is always yes and for many reasons. I will get into some of the others in another blog post, but removing the grass with a sod cutter first will remove the majority of the nutsedge in your pool area and reduce the odds of you having this pesky weed growing up through your new pool liner.

Once your ground is level and the pool wall and frame are constructed, now would be time to treat the ground. An application of a quality nutgrass killer just before installing the pool liner is recommended if you suspect nutgrass in your yard. Only someone totally reckless would know about the problem weed and chance not spending a few more dollars to protect their brand new pool liner from impending disaster.

Once the weed starts growing through the liner it’s too late, from here on out all you can do is kill each individual new plant and patch your liner. There’s no telling how many patches you’ll be making but you’d best get some liquid poison, a syringe and a patch kit. You may get lucky and only have a few blades to deal with but I’ve seen pools with hundreds.

If you find yourself with too many nutgrass blades to contend with, you’re best to just pull out the pool liner, toss it and buy another. This happens all the time here in Central Florida and most people have no idea how troublesome this weed can be. I’ve seen it everywhere from Palm Bay to Orlando and even up the coast.  Now that you know about it’s time to make sure this problem doesn’t happen to you.

NOTE: Pool liner manufacturers do not warranty nutrass damage nor do any pool installers that I’m aware of. Odds are you won’t get it but a healthy dose of proper nutrass killer will likely ensure you won’t. In my years of doing swimming pool installs I treated the ground on every job. Even in doing this I still would see 1%-2% of the pools develop some degree of grass growing through. If you suspect you may have a nutgrass problem,or just want to play it safe, do not skip out on treating the ground as the cost of doing so can get expensive.

In recent time the internet has drastically changed the way we shop for everything including above ground pool liners.  In years past we went to the corner pool store picked up a liner and went home to install it. Nowadays the pool stores are either gone or have nothing that resembles a pool liner on their shelves. If you’re lucky enough to find one it’s likely not the size you need or it’s a pattern you don’t care for. This is where the internet really shines, thousands of products and rock bottom pricing, right? The answer is yes if you know what your really getting, so before you make your above ground pool liner purchase online there are a few things you need to know first.


All Pool Liners Are Not Created Equal


What I mean here is there are several different grades of pool liner so shopping by price isn’t the best way to go. Going this route can be an expensive lesson to learn for those bargain shoppers out there, buy the wrong liner and you may be doing this twice and that’s never a bargain.

When shopping for pool liners in Florida you may notice that there’s a wide range of prices for what seems to be the same size liner. This is because the thickness, materials and overall build quality can vary greatly. Buy one of those ultra cheap Made In China liners and it can leak right out of the box. Step up to an American made pool liner and you’ll likely get 3-5 years from it here in Florida. For those wanting to do this only once and have a liner that lasts 15-20 years, buy a Doughboy liner.  Make no mistake, you will get exactly what you pay for so decide what you really want before ordering. Buying a pool liner online is fine, just know what you are getting.


How Do I Know What I’m Buying


When shopping for your new above ground pool liner it pays to read or listen carefully. Pay attention to what the salesman says about the liner as much as what he doesn’t say. Leaving out the name of the manufacturer, material thickness, warranty info etc are clues they don’t want to know those things.

There has been a tidal wave of Chinese pool liners on the market in recent time and I can tell you first hand these liners are garbage. If a customer calls us to install a pool liner and they already have, we ask where it was purchased from. The reason is many of the bargain priced liner are so thin and poorly constructed that we don’t want to install them. They often leak or tear as a result of poor craftsmanship and not the installation process. To avoid potential conflicts we often pass on doing this type of work.


Where Should I Buy My Pool Liner


There are many places to buy an above ground pool liner but I would recommend you stack the odds in your favor by shopping a reputable pool dealer you can trust. If you can call and speak to a knowledgeable person with pool liner experience then that’s probably a good place to go. If your in Florida and they’re way across the country shop somewhere else. If you can click and buy but can’t speak to anyone, shop somewhere else. If the liner specs are vague shop somewhere else.

Important! Don’t be afraid to spend an extra $50 dollars and buy from a reputable local company, it’s likely a better liner and they’ll be there to help you out if there is a problem.  Here’s a link to my recommended local pool liner dealer, this is where I send all of my customers.
